005.20 EMPATHY MAP

We’re often taught to be empathic means to relate to someone’s suffering, but in this exercise, instead of connecting over shared struggle, we make space and listen. This is a great activity to do with anyone, but start with someone you enjoy spending time with and know well.

EMPATHY MAP

Preparation

This is a two-person activity.

At least an hour.

You'll need a good friend.

Instructions

Watch this TED Talk.

Schedule an hour with a friend.

Prepare some questions (see the empathy map template for examples).

Focus on them. Avoid making the conversation about you, even if it seems you have the perfect thing to add.

Tips

Ask open-ended and neutral questions (e.g., ask "What do you think about ____?" not "What frustrates you about ____?"

Embrace silence. Pursue tangents. Observe body language. Thank them when you're done.

Extend

After, map their answers using the template.

Consider

How do you feel about the conversation?

What was it like to listen in this way?

What did you learn about this person? What did you learn about yourself?

How did your body feel as you focused on listening? What doors did your friend's words open?
